Ligatures don't only tell the reader something about the pronunciation of a certain word, but can also hold information about the specific typographic history of that character. After extensive research into the German 'ß' and how it came to be, I designed a set of ligatures for the most characteristic sounds of the German language. I wanted to introduce characters that would not only let the reader know that he or she was looking at a German word, but also how to pronounce it.
